Cisco Wireless licenses are subscription-based software licenses that enable the deployment and management of
Cisco Wi-Fi 7 Access Points across on-premises, cloud-managed, or hybrid wireless environments. Supported on Cisco IOS XE 17.15.2 and later, they provide a flexible licensing model that simplifies network expansion, lifecycle management, and feature activation.
Available License Tiers
- Cisco Wireless Essentials (LIC-CW-E) – Delivers core wireless management, security, monitoring, and operational capabilities for enterprise deployments.
- Cisco Wireless Advantage (LIC-CW-A) – Includes all Essentials features plus advanced capabilities such as AI-powered Radio Resource Management (RRM), AP Auto-Location, and enhanced automation for large-scale wireless environments.
Key Benefits
- Single subscription model for on-premises, cloud, and hybrid deployments.
- Simplified purchasing, license renewals, and expansion.
- New AP licenses automatically inherit parent network settings.
- Centralized license management through Cisco Smart Accounts and Virtual Accounts.
- Licensing tiers aligned with Cisco DNA Wireless Essentials and Advantage feature sets.
Controller Licensing
Cisco Catalyst 9800 Series Wireless Controllers require either Unified Licensing or Smart Licensing, depending on the AP generation. Wi-Fi 7 access points require Unified Licensing, while Wi-Fi 6E and earlier models support Smart Licensing. Controllers can boot without licenses, but each connected AP must have a valid subscription to enable full wireless functionality. License upgrades or downgrades between Essentials and Advantage can be performed through Cisco Catalyst Center and become effective after the controller reboot.
